Fresh Friday IV

If you haven’t been reading THS for long, let me tell you about my GOLDEN year.  The year I turned 28 [on the 28th! hence the “golden”] I set out on a year long mission to TRY. NEW. THINGS.  [You can read about the experience here: Golden Year Goals: The End ] The experience gave me a new appreciation for stepping away from the comfortable favorites and taking a bite of the yet-to-be-experienced things in life.

Real Food RunnerI’ve tried to carry on with the desire for trying new things, and I love Fresh Fridays [hosted by Katherine at Real Food Eats] because of the encouragement to look for, notice, and celebrate NEWNESS in your life. The focus on FRESHNESS reminds me to choose something other than the regular each week.  [and I encourage you to give it a try, too!]

Three things that brought FRESHNESS to my week:

whistling kettle

1. I started a new habit this week: Sunday Girl Lunches [SGL], with my dear friends Alicia and Emily!  I’m glad we’re going to be adding more of these to our lives, and already have one scheduled for this weekend! BOOM! We get things done.

2. While we were at The Whistling Kettle for lunch on said first ever SGL last Sunday, I purposely chose my meal with Fresh Fridays and my Golden year influence in mind.  While I did get my normal “Afternoon Tea” option, I made sure that 75% of my choices were not only new, but something I wouldn’t necessarily ever pick at first glance.  First things first, I went with the Green Chai with a little milk and sugar.  When you’re at the tea house, the only way to do it is with a little milk and sugar, right? It was my first time trying their Green Chai and I give a great, big, two thumbs up!

I chose the Italian Roast Beef panini as my top layer.  The sandwich was layered with medium roast beef, sun-dried tomato aioli, spinach, red onions, roasted red pepper and Swiss cheese and was grilled to melty perfection.   Usually, I grab for the Lobster Bisque, but with Emily’s seal of approval as being in her top five soups of CDNY, I chose a cup of the Roasted Red Pepper with Smoked Gouda for my middle layer.  The soup was REALLY hot when it was served, and I still couldn’t stop trying to eat it for long enough to let it really cool off at all.  After burning my mouth at least three times, I finally pushed it aside and started in on my sandwich, knowing I couldn’t resist the goodness even if it was flaming unless I had something else to distract my taste buds.  [Thankfully, that sandwich did the job. WOAH. Flavor overload!]

The Whistling Kettle on UrbanspoonAnd with my 3 of 4 new experience choices a success, I fell prey to my go-to, order whenever it’s on the menu, which isn’t that big of a deal because it’s almost always on the menu, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.  After I ordered, I had a moment of realization that I was surprised by my decision.  I remembered, of course it was after I ordered, that the last few times I’ve had carrot cake I’d been kind of disappointed with it.  Thankfully, when the cake arrived it was terrific.  Not at all dry or crumbly, which has been my sad critique of the previous disappointment-filled cakes.

3. ohmygosh. KETTLE CORN.  Why did none of you tell me about KETTLE CORN!?!?  Remember that George Washington on a Tractor Impulse buy I mentioned on Twosday?  Well, I was serious when I said I only bought the bag because it had a President on it, because at that point in time I had never even had KETTLE CORN before.

You may notice I can’t type KETTLE CORN without using capital letters because WHY DID NONE OF YOU TELL ME HOW GREAT KETTLE CORN IS!?!?!  The bag?  I emptied it in about three days; and “I don’t even really like popcorn!” [<- that’s what I pretend to believe, but have found myself wanting a lot in the past year. damn it, adulthood!]
