My Thoughts on Mary Kay

When BlogHer asked if I was interested in trying out some products from Mary Kay, I jumped at the chance.  After all, 2011 is the year of the self portrait and of deserving beauty, and my 28th year is all about trying new things.

I guess I’ve always known of Mary Kay products based on pop culture references, most of which point towards a pink Cadillac.  [After all, I’m a self-proclaimed pop-culture princess; it would make sense that my familiarity with the brand stemmed from references on movies, television and the like.] I remember a few mothers in the small community I went to high school in were consultants, and occasionally I am sure I smelled a lotion one daughter had, or tried a lip gloss from another, but at the time I wasn’t into beauty products.

Now that I’ve embraced a desire and deserving of feeling my best, trying Mary Kay products was an amazing opportunity to introduce myself to a brand that has been known for “pretty” way beyond my lifetime.  The Mary Kay package [all wrapped up in a pink bow? Adorbs!] I received for testing included:

Of course, I felt it only appropriate to do a little before and after with these products.  When more perfect to try out an entire new routine of beauty products than before a super fun cocktail party, right?

Here’s my before, including crazy travel-hair!

And after:

Alright, alright; enough of my smiley face! Let’s talk product!

For someone who doesn’t often wear lipcolor or blush, I was quite impressed with both the Mary Kay Crème Lipstick and Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color.  The Cheek Color, which I received in Cherry Blossom, was just the right amount of color to give myself a rosy, subtle warmth in my cheeks.  I loved that it wasn’t too dark or ‘obvious’ when I had it on.  And the Creme Lipstick in Fushia really impressed me with it’s long lasting color.  I dabbed a little on, and spread it over my lips for a light tint effect, and the color lasted all throughout the evening, even after two glasses of wine and a plate full of food.

I absolutely loved that the Mary Kay Compact Mini is magnetic – you can switch out the colors for eyes and cheeks, replace and replenish as necessary.  I love this idea especially for traveling and not wanting to bring your entire make-up kit with you – just a few of your favorite shades of eye shadow and a blush and you are set to go.  The kit comes with a set of mini brushes which are stored under the make-up, in the same compact.  I love the ease of it all!

Also, I always seem to run out of one shade of shadow in a multi-colored compact a lot sooner than the others.  With the Compact Mini, I can replace each color when needed without needing to purchase an entire new set of colors.

As for the Mary Kay Lash Love Mascara – there is a reason the product is called “Lash Love.” After applying, I seriously loved my lashes.  Sometimes I forget how much I love my eyes and lashes, but I was batting my eyes in the mirror when I noticed how long and full my lashes were when highlighted with the Lash Love.

My most favorite product of the kit, though was Mary Kay TimeWise Microdermabrasion Set, hands down.  I started using it the day I received the kit from Mary Kay, and I have to tell you, I’m kind of crazy about it.  The goal of the set is beautiful, smooth skin and each time I went through the two step process – Step 1: Refine, an advance exfoliater, and Step 2: Replenish, which completely nourishes the skin, I could see my face had a special sort of glow.  As a matter of fact, the first day I used the set before work, two people in my office commented on how pretty I looked that day!  I can definitely see myself using the Mary Kay Time Wise Microdermabrasion Set from here on out.

I’d like to try one of their lipsticks. I’ve never been a lipstick wearer, but would like to find something that looks natural.

Hey Heather! I would love to try the lip color. I’ve tried the microdermabrasion kit (at a MK demo party) and loved it, but I decided not to buy it. I recently bought the MK tinted moisturizer; I think you’d love it. You seem like the kinda girl who doesn’t wear a ton of makeup and, when she does, doesn’t want it to be too heavy. The tinted moisturizer is PERFECT for that. Give it a whirl if you can. Oh, and you’re right, the mascara (all varieties I’ve tried) is fantastic. 🙂

I wore Mary Kay growing up 🙂 It’s really big here in the Tejas.

I want to try the lipstick you are wearing! I have awful luck with lipstick and that color is enough to give you a POP but doesn’t look too obvious or ridiculous!

    You look beautiful, friend!

I knew so many people in SETX who were Mary Kay reps, but I was always scared of trying to their products because I felt like they were too expensive for my budget and I didn’t want to find out that I loved something I couldn’t afford to have. Poor me, right? haha. But apparently my desire to try new pretty fun things is weighing out that concern this time.

I do love what you said about compact mini. I have the same problem with finishing one color and having to buy a whole new set.

I would also probably love trying ANY skin care or coverage products they have since my complexion is just terrible!

    Also, I tweeted. 🙂 http://twitter.com/#!/kayejohn88/status/116968398830833664

I love that you can switch out the individual colors! I always run out of one color faster than the others.

Also, I just started wearing lipstick daily instead of just special occasions, and I have to say it makes me feel much more put together. Especially on days when little other make up makes it on my face 🙂

I’ve used Mary Kay makeup off and on since I was 16 years old – and that was over three decades ago! It’s always great quality and the colors are beautiful. My favorite are the lipsticks, such great colors and it makes your lips feel great.
