Creative Spotlights are part of the THS dedication to Handmade Christmas 2010. I’m bringing you the goods, showing off the talents of some of my favorite creators!  Just a reminder, there are several different ways to participate, and several different reasons why you should consider joining us for Handmade Christmas 2010.

New Leaf Handmade Goods is Maria and Cecelia, sisters who make stuff and love doing it.

Maria and Cecelia have always had a soft spot for paper and fabric and buttons, not to mention garage sailing and thrift-shop-exploration.

The materials New Leaf Handmade uses are almost completely post-consumer, allowing them to make less of a mark on the earth while doing what they love to do.

“Most of the paper, fabrics, furniture, etc. are post-consumer materials: fabric we’ve discovered in thrift shops, parts of greeting cards we’ve received, stationary my grandpa found at a garage sale. It’s important to us that what we create doesn’t require a whole lot of newly manufactured parts.”

Through New Leaf Handmade, Maria and Cecelia have found a way to mix all these passions together to create items of loveliness.

“We like to think that the materials we use to create our products are turning over a new leaf.”

“There’s personality, and surely a few stories, attached to our materials. We make our goods in anticipation of bringing beauty into your life and allowing those stories to continue!”

All of the paper and covers for the notebooks, are hand cut allowing the ladies behind New Leaf to carefully selectt an interesting, yet practical (meaning leaving lots of space for you to fill!) mix of papers to bring together.

Because most of the paper has been salvaged, pre-used, repurposed or recycled to make these unique notebooks, so there is a lot of personality in our pages. Pages could include things like sketchbook paper, notebook paper, blank paper, computer paper, maps, photo copies, construction paper, junk mail, book pages, sheet music, tracing paper, thick paper, wrapping paper.  Despite all these materials added in, be assured that most of the pages are blank, allowing for lots of room for drawing, writing, doodling, listing and thinking.

On the inside of the back cover you can find "The Story" of where the paper came from.  I love this little detail to each of the notebooks!

What I Say & What I Mean

What I say and what I mean are my disguise in words.

I say I’ve lost 40lbs. What I mean is that the scale reads that I’ve lost anywhere between 30 and 40 pounds, depending on the day.

I say I’m working on losing the remaining over-weight and getting to my goal.  What I mean is that I wish the weight would fall of on it’s own, that I didn’t have to put in any effort.

I say I don’t share about my losing weight because it’s personal.  What I mean is that I am afraid to set weight loss goals out to others because I don’t want to fail, to be held accountable by anyone.

I say I’m eating for my best health.  What I mean is that I am eating for my “whatever I want to eat right now” health, treats and snacks and more than enough.

I say I make one healthy decision at a time. What I mean is that I make one healthy decision at a time, one out of every five-or-so decisions.

104_5027

I’ve been drinking a glass or two of wine each evening the last week.
Last night I made a batch of 8 cookies.  I just ate the last one and made another batch.
I eat 3-5 large coffee shop treats each week, as I blog or tweet or answer emails.
How can I make local pub sweet potato fries healthier? I know! I’ll dip them in mayo.
Greek yogurt is healthy. Three servings of Greek yogurt a day, each topped with crumbled baked good, salted cashews, granola, and almond butter may be pushing it.

And it has to stop.
I need to start saying what I mean and meaning what I say.
I need to stop viewing restriction as such a bad thing.
I need to start making a plan and sticking to it.
I need to stop being ashamed of what I have to lose.
I need to start sharing my goals and my progress and my follow through with someone.
I need to stop pretending.

I am maskless. I am wigless. I am hatless.
My disguises are gone and I am ready to put it all out there, as me.
I will lose the weight. I will do what it takes, as I’ve done it before.  I will succeed.

Best Side Dish Ever

I’ve fallen in love.
With a side dish.
The kind of love where I speak in an annoying baby voice and use pet names like “sweet potato” and “hot stuff”.
I love this side dish.
Best side dish ever.
Also may be the easiest pretend-fancy side dish ever.
If the President of the United States came over for dinner, I would serve an actual-fancy main course, and this for the pretend-fancy side dish.
Because I love this side dish.
